故事发生在繁华的大都市纽约，马蒂（欧内斯特·博格宁 Ernest Borgnine 饰）是生活在其中的一名肉店工人，他没有英俊的外貌，没有富裕的身家，唯一有的，是一颗如金子般闪闪发光的善良的内心。在生活中，居住在中下层贫民聚居的街区的马蒂经常受到他人的白眼和歧视，对于这一切，马蒂只能默默忍受。
